5 Causes of a Blank Smart Thermostat Screen in Deerfield, IL
There are many issues your HVAC system in Deerfield, IL, can experience, but a blank thermostat screen is not one you’d normally expect. Consider these five problems that may cause a blank smart thermostat screen in your home:
Power Supply Problems
Smart thermostats receive power from several possible sources. Most have two red wires that provide power and a common wire that creates a continuous power loop. It’s this loop that allows your thermostat’s advanced features to work properly.
Any number of problems can interrupt the power supply to the thermostat. These problems include wiring issues, tripped circuit breakers or batteries with insufficient charge. Aside from changing your batteries, you can request repair services to troubleshoot other suspected problems.
Aging Smart Thermostat
Thermostats have an expected service life of approximately 10 to 15 years, or about the same as an air conditioner. While the most common issue with aging thermostats is faulty temperature sensors, it could also present a blank screen. You can prevent these issues by replacing an aging thermostat before it fails.
Display Brightness Turned Down
Some smart thermostats have display brightness adjustments, so it may appear blank if the brightness is too low. Also, some models have automatic brightness adjustment, so the amount of ambient light in the room could affect its brightness. Check to be sure the brightness is sufficient.
Blown Fuse
Some thermostat models have an internal fuse to provide additional protection from power surges. If that fuse does its job and blows during a surge, it’ll cause your thermostat to lose power.
Tripped Safety Switches
Every HVAC system has safety switches built in to shut down the system in the event of certain problems. These may include an upper limit switch on the furnace and a float switch in the drip pan. In some systems, when these trip, it interrupts the power supply to the thermostat, causing a blank screen.
Your thermostat sends signals to your HVAC system, so it must work properly. Prevent many common issues by scheduling an HVAC maintenance visit with one of our experienced service technicians at Carefree Comfort Inc.
