Most people don’t think much about the plumbing in their Highland Park, Illinois, home unless something goes wrong. Although plumbers appreciate the business, you could save yourself time and money by not making these three mistakes.
Using Your Plumbing for Garbage
One of the biggest perpetrators of clogs stems from using your garbage disposal, sink or toilet as a trash can. People overload their garbage disposal and use it for fruit peels, dense foods and even food packaging.
Your garbage disposal works well for small amounts of food, but you shouldn’t use it for everything. Throw any type of packaging and leftover food you want to pitch in the trash can. Or better yet, start a compost pile with all the leftover food.
Don’t flush anything down the toilet that doesn’t belong, and don’t wash down everything in your sink. Too much hair, products, and other trash belong in the garbage can and not in your plumbing. It takes less than you think to clog your pipes.
Fixing Problems Yourself
If you’re handy, it’s tempting to try to fix plumbing issues yourself. Unfortunately, making mistakes can lead to bigger issues. Some smaller issues are fine to tackle on your own, but the more significant problems should always be left up to a plumber. Know your limits with DIY projects and always call in an expert for anything bigger than a minor issue.
Turning off Your Heater
During holidays and vacations, some homeowners try to save money by turning off their heaters when they travel. Unfortunately, this idea backfires if the pipes freeze and burst.
During the winter, refrain from turning your heat off completely. You can set the temperature lower to save energy, but turning it off completely can lead to a very messy problem if it dips below freezing and your pipes burst.
